Sermons on Promises
An Expositional Sermon 2 Corinthians 1:20 “Jesus Christ, the Fulfillment of All of God’s Promises” Theme/Big Idea: All of the promises of God find their “yes” in Jesus Christ. Aim/Appropriation/Application: Repent of your sin and be found as an inheritor of God’s promises through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone.
An Expositional Sermon Hebrews 6:13-20 “The Certainty of God’s Promises” Guest Preacher: Steven Leatherbury Outline: 3 reasons the Christian can have assurance in the promises of God: (1) Because of the Character of God (2) Because of the Purpose of God (3) Because Christians Have Been Made Secure for Eternity
Theme: God is sovereign over all and will judge the nations. Aim: Be comforted and consoled as God’s people as we walk in exile in this world. The world will persecute you, and seek to destroy you, the world will lash out at God by coming against His people. If you trust in Christ that doesn’t mean you will live “your best life now.” Life here may not get easier if you trust in Christ, but your hope for God’s eternal kingdom will squelch out the empty promises of this fallen world. We will suffer, life will not be easy for God’s people in this world, but God’s perfect justice and judgment is coming. And He will usher His people into His eternal kingdom. (1) God Reveals (Daniel 7:1-3) (2) God Has Enemies (Daniel 7:4-8) (3) God Judges & Destroys His Enemies (Daniel 7:9-12)
Theme: The book of beginnings comes to an end, but God’s promise remains forever. Aim: Know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Remind yourself of this promise when trials come. (1) Spiritual Famine (Genesis 42:1-29) (2) Testing & Reconciliation (Genesis 43:1-45:28) (3) God Does Not Forget His Promise (Genesis 46:1-47:31) (4) Looking for God’s Promises (Genesis 48:1-49:33) (5) Forgiveness & All Things for Good (Genesis 50:1-26)
Theme: Though God’s covenant people struggle with unbelief as they wait, God keeps His promises. Aim: “Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!” (Psalm 27:14) (1) Faith & Unbelief in God (Genesis 21:1-33) (2) Faith that God Can Raise the Dead (Genesis 22:1-23) (3) Faith that God Will Fulfill His Promises (Genesis 23:1-25:18
