“How Idolatry Works” Daniel 3:1-7

Worship Christ. One of the reasons that idolatry is tempting is because it capitalizes on half-truths. We are all worshippers. We were created to have awe and reverence for something. We are imagers, who were created to reflect the beautiful image of God. In our sin and the fall the world was broken, and in rebellion against God we deserve His eternal wrath for rejecting and fighting against this eternal God. We were made to worship God. And in our rebellion we set things up to worship instead. As Calvin said, our hearts are idol factories. Know that about your heart. This is why the worship of the one true and living God can seem to be similar to the worship we see in this text. The worship of Yahweh – the one true and living God who exists in the three persons of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – looks similar but instead of the source and goal being man and the things man has made, the worship of Yahweh comes from God Himself. He is bringing together a congregation from the nations, He sends us out as His heralds making the good news of salvation through the death and resurrection of Christ known, as we sing Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. We warn the nations of God’s wrath that is to come, and we fall down and worship him. Idolatry is a perversion of the worship of God and it opposes His majesty. That’s why it’s such a temptation to our hearts. Flee God’s wrath, trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. See the emptiness of the idols that our hearts too quickly run after, and persevere no matter what threats this world may bring against you.
