What Is the Gospel? Romans 1:1-3:31

Theme: The gospel is the good news of how we can be saved from God’s wrath for our sin through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Aim: Repent and believe in the gospel. (1) God – The gospel is God’s righteousness revealed (Romans 1:1-17) a. There is a God b. The gospel is God’s message i. The gospel is the message that was foretold (Romans 1:1-3; 3:21) ii. The gospel is a message about God’s Son, Jesus Christ (Romans 1:9) iii. The gospel is a message (Romans 1:1, 5-6, 9, 11-15) iv. The gospel has power toward all who believe (Romans 1:16) v. The gospel reveals God’s righteousness (Romans 1:17) (2) Man – The gospel demands an understanding of God’s wrath for man’s unrighteousness (1:18-3:20) a. God is wrathful for unrighteousness (Romans 1:18-32) b. God judges the secrets of men by Jesus Christ (Romans 2:1-29) c. No human being will be justified in God’s sight by works of the law (Romans 3:1-20) (3) Christ – The gospel is God’s saving righteousness for His people in Jesus Christ (Romans 3:21-3:31) a. Righteousness apart from the law b. What are you trusting in for salvation? (4) Response – The gospel demands that all mankind repent and believe in Jesus Christ (1:5, 17, 25, 28; 2:1-5, 4, 7, 8; etc.)

“The First Lord’s Supper” Mark 14:12-25

Theme: Jesus is the bread of life and our good shepherd Aim: Put your hope in Christ, not yourself. Feed upon Christ by faith. (1) Hope in Jesus (Mark 14:12-16) (2) Don’t Hope in Yourself (Mark 14:17-21) (3) A Feast of Hope (Mark 14:22-25)

“Freedom from Slavery to Sin” Mark 8:27-38

Theme: Jesus is the Messiah, who came to die and be raised from the dead, who requires our death. Aim: Trust in Jesus as God’s Messiah, trust in the power of His death and resurrection alone to save you from sin, death and God’s wrath, and die to your self-centeredness. Die to yourself so that Jesus might be all in your life. Take up the cross of identifying with Jesus in the face of the opposition of this world. (1) Who Is Jesus? “The Unity of the Kingdom” Mark 3:7-35

Theme: The only source of true Christian unity is found in Jesus Christ alone. Aim: That God would help us to grow in our unity as disciples and as a family through Jesus Christ. (1) The Importance of Hearing (Mark 3:7-12) (2) The Purpose of Discipleship (Mark 3:13-21) (3) The United Kingdom (Mark 3:22-30) (4) The Family of Christ (Mark 3:31-35)

“King for Sinners” Mark 2:1-17

Theme: Jesus came for the sick, forgiving sin and calling sinners. Aim: Jesus is a king for sinners who feel their need for him. You can’t have Jesus as your king unless you’re a sinner. If you refuse to acknowledge you’re a sinner, friend drop your guise. Drop your pride. Open your eyes and see your need in the face of the coming judgment of a holy God. “King Jesus” Mark 1:16-45

Theme: Jesus rules over men, spirits, and illness, and His prayerful mission was to preach the gospel. Aim: Turn from the empty kings of this world, and have Christ as your King. Jesus is… (1) King over men (Mark 1:14-20) (2) King over spirits (Mark 1:21-28, 32) (3) King over illness (Mark 1:29-34, 40-45) (4) A King who prays and preaches (Mark 1:35-39)
