“Creation & Promise” Genesis 1:1-50:26 (Overview)

Theme: God created all things, man fell in sin, God made a promise of a savior, and God keeps His promises. Aim: That as we see how this book is pointing at Jesus Christ our hearts would grow to love Christ more, and that we would grow in our understanding of why things are the way they are in this world. (1) Creation (Genesis 1-2) (2) Fall (Genesis 2-3) (3) Redemption (Genesis 3:14-15) (4) God’s Promise to Abram, Isaac & Jacob (Genesis 12-36) (5) Israel to Egypt (Genesis 37-50)

“God’s People Go to Egypt” Genesis 42:1-50:26

Theme: The book of beginnings comes to an end, but God’s promise remains forever. Aim: Know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Remind yourself of this promise when trials come. (1) Spiritual Famine (Genesis 42:1-29) (2) Testing & Reconciliation (Genesis 43:1-45:28) (3) God Does Not Forget His Promise (Genesis 46:1-47:31) (4) Looking for God’s Promises (Genesis 48:1-49:33) (5) Forgiveness & All Things for Good (Genesis 50:1-26)

“God Preserves His People” Genesis 37:1-41:57

Theme: God preserves His weak and sinful people. Aim: Trust that God is at work for your good and His glory. (1) Lord of the Dreams (Genesis 37:1-36) (2) Embracing Sin & Fleeing Sin (Genesis 38:1-39:23) (3) God Preserves His People (Genesis 40:1-41:57)

“The Beginning of Israel” Genesis 32:1-36:43

Theme: God fulfills his promise to graciously create and preserve His people contrary to what they deserve. Aim: Be reconciled to God through the Messiah-offspring of Israel, Jesus Christ. (1) Can men strive with God? (Genesis 32:1-32) (2) Is reconciliation possible? (Genesis 33:1-20) (3) Is there any justice? (Genesis 34:1-31) (4) The beginning of Israel (Genesis 35:1-36:43)

“God’s Promise Extends to Jacob” Genesis 25:19-31:55

Theme: God will keep His promises and He will hold His people fast. Aim: Build your hopes in the promises of God, and have the Lord as your fear. (1) God Elects (Genesis 25:19-34; Malachi 1:2-3; Romans 9:13) a. Pray God’s promises (Genesis 25:21; 32:9-12) (2) God Is His People’s Fear (Genesis 26:1-35) (3) God Fulfills His Promise Through and To Sinners (Genesis 27:1-28:22) (4) God Gives Jacob a Family (Genesis 29:1-31:55)

“God’s Promise Extends to Isaac” Genesis 21:1-25:18

Theme: Though God’s covenant people struggle with unbelief as they wait, God keeps His promises. Aim: “Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!” (Psalm 27:14) (1) Faith & Unbelief in God (Genesis 21:1-33) (2) Faith that God Can Raise the Dead (Genesis 22:1-23) (3) Faith that God Will Fulfill His Promises (Genesis 23:1-25:18

“God Judges in Fire” Genesis 18:1-20:18

Theme: God is just in His judgment of humanity for their sins. Aim: Pray that God would make His love for us so real to our knowledge and experience that it expels our temptation to sin. (1) God Will Save His People (Genesis 18:1-33) (2) God Will Pour Out Wrath for Sin (Genesis 19:1-38) (3) The Struggle with Fear & Unbelief (Genesis 20:1-18)

“God Judges in Scattering” Genesis 11:1-32

Theme: God is the tower and security of His people, don’t reject Him by trying to build your own. Aim: Don’t put your pride, joy, and hope in the cities of this world or in the things that you build. Put your hope in God through Christ. (1) We Are Worshippers (Genesis 11:1-9) (2) Misdirected Worship (Genesis 11:1-9 & 10:8-12) (3) God’s Judgment (Genesis 11:5-7 & Psalm 2 & Isaiah 29:13-16) (4) God’s Mercy (Genesis 11:10-32)

“God Judges in Water” Genesis 5:1-10:32

Theme: God is glorified in salvation through judgment. Aim: Trust in Jesus Christ. By faith in the death and resurrection of Christ we can be found in the only vessel that can ride safely out from the wrath of God. (1) The Lineage of Promise (Genesis 5:1-32) (2) God Is Good and Just in Judgment (Genesis 6:1-7:24) (3) God Is Gracious and Merciful in Judgment (Genesis 6:8-10, 18-22; 7:1-5, 12-16, 18; 8:1-22) (4) God Keeps His Promise (9:1-10:28)

“The First Family” Genesis 4:1-26

Theme: God’s promise holds firm even as sin spreads. Aim: Beware of religion that is filled with activity, but has no love for Christ that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith (1 Tim. 1:5).
