Matthew 19 – Marriage/Divorce/Remarriage, Let the Children Come to Jesus, Rich Young Man

Jesus went to Judea, large crowds followed, and he healed them. The Pharisee’s tested him asking if it’s lawful to divorce. Jesus quoted Scripture to them about marriage – 1 man + 1 woman + leaving father & mother + being united to a wife = let not man separate what God has joined. They asked why Moses commanded to give a certificate of divorce. Jesus said because of their hard hearts. Jesus said, “Whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.” The disciples said it’s better not to marry. Let whomever is able receive this teaching. Children were brought to Jesus that He might lay his hands on them and pray, Jesus said to such belongs the kingdom of heaven. A man came to Jesus asking what good deed he must do to have eternal life. Jesus said only one is good, if he would enter life, keep the commandments. The young man said he kept all the ones Jesus lists. Jesus said, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” The man was sorrowful, because he had great possessions. Jesus said it’s difficult for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. It’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle. With man salvation is impossible, with God all things are possible. When Jesus sits on his glorious throne, the disciples will sit on 12 thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel. Everyone who leaves houses and family for Jesus’ sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. The first will be last, and last first.

We should fight for faithfulness to our marriages. God’s design is for our marriages to be until our death for our good and His glory. Jesus Christ loves children. To such belongs the kingdom of heaven. And it is difficult to for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. Watch your heart. Do our hearts struggle to cherish Christ more than our stuff? Let your love of Christ overpower the temptation to cling to money and possessions.
