Acts 18 – Paul Preaches the Word, When Rejected by Jews Goes to Gentiles, God Had Many In the City Who Were His People So Keep Preaching, Accused of Persuading People to Worship God Contrary to Law, Apollos in Ephesus

Paul left Athens for Corinth. Found Aquila (a Jew) – tentmakers. Paul reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath trying to persuade Jews and Greeks. Silas and Timothy get to Macedonia, Paul is occupied with the word, testifying to the Jews that the Christ was Jesus. When they opposed him he shook his garments at them and moved to the Gentiles. Went to the house of Titius Justus. Crispus (ruler of the synagogue) and his household believed the Lord. Many Corinthians believed and were baptized. The Lord said to Paul in a vision not to be afraid, keep speaking, don’t be silent, I am with you, no one will attack you, for I have many in this city who are my people. Paul stayed 6 months. The Jews made a united attack on Paul, and accused that he is persuading people to worship God contrary to the law. The Jews brought this to Gallio. He said it’s just a matter of questions about words and names and your own law, see to it yourselves. He refused to judge. They seized Sosthenes (ruler of the synagogue) and beat him. Gallio paid no attention. Paul set sail for Syria with Priscilla and Aquila. They came to Ephesus, he went into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. They asked him to stay longer, but he refused, saying he would return if God wills. They set sail from Ephesus and landed at Caesarea, the church greeted him and then he went to Antioch. He then went through Galatia and Phrygia strengthening the disciples. A Jew named Apollos came to Ephesus. Eloquent and competent in the Scriptures. He had been taught, and he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only John’s baptism. Priscilla and Aquilla explained the way of God more accurately. When he wanted to go to Achaia the brothers encouraged him, and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived he greatly helped the believers (who believed through grace). He powerfully refuted the Jews showing by the Scriptures that the Christ was Jesus.

The constant goal and aim of these early believers was to preach the Bible. To prove that Jesus was the Christ promised in the Jewish Scriptures. Also, notice how churches are cooperating together. Consider the humility of Apollos even. He had been taught and was a great speaker, but this didn’t issue to His pride. When Priscilla and Aquilla pulled him aside and explained the way of God more accurately it doesn’t appear that he was offended, but only continued to teach and was commended to Achaia. This is the mission of the church – to preach the gospel and call sinners like us to turn from their sin, believe in Jesus as the Christ, be baptized, and being added to a church.
