The serpent was more crafty than the other creatures the Lord [Yahweh] God [Elohim] had made. He questioned God’s Word, and then said God didn’t forbid the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The woman took, ate, and gave to her husband and he ate. They heard the Lord God walking in the cool of the day and they hid, but God knew. (1) He cursed the serpent and promised the serpent would be crushed by the woman’s offspring. (2) The woman was punished by experiencing pain in childbearing and conflict with her husband. (3) Because of Adam God cursed the ground and producing food would be difficult, and he would die. Adam called his wife Eve . The Lord God made them garments of skins for clothes. The triune God banished Adam and Eve from Eden [paradise] and He placed cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.
We all fell in sin and rebellion in our first parents; pain, toil, and death entered the world in this sin; but God promised to crush the serpent through a child that would come from Eve’s lineage. Praise God that in the midst of despair and punishment for sin, God provides hope in the promise of a child who would save His people.
