“Forced Away from Home” Daniel 1:1-7

An Expositional Sermon
Kings and kingdoms; every age is laced with these themes. It may not seem like it at first, but in the end the good or poor exercise of authority and power affects our lives. And many of us probably could rattle off a number of memories about how authority was used in our lives in a good way or a poor way: either from a teacher in the past, a boss, or possibly your parents. Even our fiction captures these themes – from the emperor in Star Wars to the wicked stepmother in Cinderella; from Sauron in the Lord of the Rings to Voldemort in the Harry Potter stories we can see that most stories of the ages pivot on the conflict between the good and evil use of power. In many ways the text we’re considering this morning is concerned with just this. Kings and kingdoms.
